The spiritual battle within us and the church - a story, an observation and a prayer.

SCRIPTURE: Romans 1:20 (TM)
By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can't see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being. So nobody has a good excuse.

STORY:
Near the end of his life, Jean-Paul Sartre told Pierre Victor: "I do not feel that I am the product of chance, a speck of dust in the universe, but someone who was expected, prepared, prefigured. In short, a being whom only a Creator could put here; and this idea of a creating hand refers to God."

OBSERVATION:
How could anyone look at the created order and deny God? Even further, how could anyone look at the blessings flowing into our lives and turn to Satan for answers, but they do it all the time … including you and me!

How? Well, it is very simple. We have a tendency to resist change and God is constantly changing even though he is changeless. God is constantly changing because he is constantly moving forward. Most of us like it where we are and we don’t want to change … thus we introduce negativity to the equation.

We don’t like change! Period, end of story! And yet it is all around us.

Further, we want it done our way. We want our opinion to win. We desire things to happen just the way we think they should happen … and if they don’t we will complain and whine and protest and make snide remarks and sow seeds of discontent and stir up problems and criticize and ... Well, you get the picture.

It is time that all of us have an attitude adjustment … or better still, a spiritual adjustment. Oh, we might not participate in the negativity and critical attitudes, but if we allow others to pull us down (as I was recently reminded by one the church leaders) then we are participating in the negativity because we are allowing that attitude to negatively affect us.

As it calls us in Joshua 24:15 to “chose this day whom you will serve” may our response be as his was: “as for me and my house (church) we will serve the Lord.” Let our light shine! And we “ain’t going to let Satan blow it out”!

PRAYER:
Keep us focused Lord keep us focused. Give us the spiritual courage to rebuke Satan wherever he is found. Let us reclaim our life, our home and our church for the King of Kings!

  1. How is God constantly changing? moving forward? if He's changeless?

    1. That does sound like theological-doublespeak ... but think on this as a possibility. God is the same yesterday, today and ever (He's changeless) in my mind that means that the attributes of love, grace and mercy, to mention only three, never changes. They are the constant of God. We can always count on God to be loving, full of grace and the giver of mercy ... no matter what the circumstances. But God is not stagnate either. God continues to create and recreate. Physics shares with us that the universe we live in is constantly expanding, God fills the universe ... therefore, he is constantly expanding or moving forward. To put it another way, God is interactive with the created order, us, and we are in constant change - God changes to meet us in the midst of life or as Dr. Bill Mallard, seminary professor, has God saying in response to our lives, "I can work with that." And then does. This help ... at least a little?

    2. Carolyn, it is not an either/or, but a both/and ...

  2. Yes, that does help - that God is interactive in our universe/world/life. But isn't it God changing us so that we can meet Him in the midst of life?
